tk choir

TK Choir

TK Choir was formed in 1992 with merely 30 members. Since then it has grown from strength to strength and today it is 150 strong.

TK Choir has achieved tremendous success. It won its first Gold award in the 1995 S’pore Youth Festival Central Judging of Choirs (SYF).

Each subsequent year TK Choir carried away the gold award . In 1999 TK Choir won the Best Choir Award in the SYF Competition. In 2002 TK Choir was admitted into the prestigious Choral Excellence Programme(CEP), an honour bestowed upon the best choirs.

There was no let up despite our great achievement. We went on to win Gold and Gold with Honours in SYF 2003 and 2005 competitions respectively.

TK Choir works very hard to maintain a high standard. Besides practising for competitions, the members are exposed to a whole variety of experiences : They perform in public concerts, share choral experiences with their counterparts overseas in exchange programmes. They also render their services at our school concerts and other local organizations.

TK Choir provides opportunities for leadership roles essential in the development of our young citizens for the future. They also learn to grow in the right environment. They learn to interact and share their knowledge with one another. The seniors guide the juniors in all aspects of the programme.

In short TK Choir provides ample opportunities for growth and development in the non–academic area.

tk band

TK Band

The beginnings of the Tanjong Katong Band can be traced to two root branches. One branch - from the former Tanjong Katong Technical School (TKTS) - began in the year 1965. That band started out humbly as a brass band with only 26 members. It called itself the Tanjong Katong Brass Band - TKBB, in short.

The first shoot of significant improvement began in 1967, when TKBB had its first combined performance with its sister band from the girls school (TKGS) next door. The TKGS band would be the other root branch of the TK Band. Along with that band, came a lady band instructress, Miss Irene Joseph, and she turned out to be the most important element that spurred and nurtured the band's development.

The 2 bands combined, and took on its own persona. It was named the Tanjong Katong Band, affectionately called TK Band. Under Miss Joseph's tutelage, the band was able to grow quickly, imbibing in both outdoor drills and music building. By 1972, the band won its first Mace of Honour. The band was also able to consistently win the outdoor competitions despite extremely fierce competition.

In the indoor competitions, the band fared well too. It is through her teaching that the band must be able to handle both the outdoor competition and the indoor competition that created the genesis of the band's versatility in these two performance forms.

Two significant events happened in the late 80's and early 90's. In 1989, the combined band split. The band went two separate ways. Miss Joseph stayed on with the band from the technical school, and it retains the name TK Band till today. In 1992, she retired, leaving behind a rich legacy and more importantly, a living one. For it was because of her shining example, that she was able to leave behind not just an outstanding band but also a cohort of very inspired alumni to carry on her work.

In 2006, honouring the school's 50th anniversary, the band put up a stellar display performance. Unprecedented in the history of display band performance, TK Band used large props that included a bell tower and 2 canons to complement its spectacular finale - a large formation of the St Basil's Cathedral in Moscow , with all its colourful domes, supported by the great Russian piece 1812 Overture. It was awarded the Display Band of the Year Award for the 5 th consecutive year, a feat no other secondary school in Singapore has ever achieved to date.

The band continues its tradition of excellence, serving as a living spirit for all members to continually strive toward greater heights, and to define excellence.

NCC (Sea)

TK NCC Sea was set up as a school based unit in 2000.

Our Activities:

Cadets in NCC Sea have the opportunity to participate in both land and sea activities, conducted by the school and NCC Sea headquarters.

The activities conducted include physical training to improve the cadets' fitness and basic drills and commands. Cadets also learn about nautical knowledge, orienteering skills and bends and hitches. Cadets learn how to work effectively with one another through organizing of camps and major projects and ceremonies.

The school organizes courses like abseiling clinic and basic/advanced kayaking awards and basic sailing proficiency award for the cadets.

Some activities conducted by the headquarters include expedition to Mount Ophir, round island kayaking expedition, individual marksmanship training, visits to Tuas Naval Base, building of rafts and remote control modeling of sailboats.

Our Achievements:

During the 2006 September holidays, NCC Sea HQ organized the Annual Sea Competition which comprises of 3 Bends and Hitches Events and 6 Kayaking Events. A total of 21 schools participated in this competition.

For the bends and hitches events, Tanjong Katong NCC SEA Unit ranked top among all schools that participated.

In the kayaking events, TK NCC SEA unit came in First for 5 out of the 6 relays contested for. With a total of 89 points, we once again emerged as the Overall Champion, hence making us the only school to have won the championship in 4 consecutive years.

Although many schools have trained hard and were eyeing for the overall championship, we, TK NCC SEA unit, remained unbeaten.

Our success owes much to the undying spirit, unconditional commitment, fiery passion and strong teamwork from the cadets, CLTs and teacher officers.

Our cadets trained extremely hard since March, on both Saturdays and Sundays, scorching under the hot sun, withstanding the harsh weather. Additional trainings on Mondays and Tuesdays were also incorporated to improve the mental and physical fitness of the cadets.

Congratulations to TK NCC SEA cadets for their excellent performance!
